AUP (Advanced Ultra Low Power) Extends Battery Life Up to 73 Percent Over Industry Standard 3.3 V Logic Options

November 13, 2003 - Texas Instruments (TI) announced the industry's lowest power logic family, Advanced Ultra Low Power (AUP) Logic. Making logic virtually unnoticeable in low-voltage battery-powered portable system designs, AUP offers considerable power savings over traditional 3.3 V logic technologies. (See: www.ti.com/aup.)

Current low-voltage logic devices may consume a significant amount of power (up to 7 percent of standby power) in typical portable applications. TI's new AUP family provides designers the capability of designing less power-hungry systems. Comparatively, AUP consumes 91 percent less static and 83 percent less dynamic power than the industry standard 3.3 V low-voltage logic technologies. In turn, AUP technology allows for 73 percent more battery life than 3.3 V low-voltage logic technologies.

AUP offers the industry's lowest power logic technology, with a current consumption of 0.9 uA of static Icc, and a CPD of 4.5 pF (typ), without sacrificing speed and signal integrity while maintaining a wide operating range of 0.8 V to 3.6 V for mixed mode environments. Along with power, speed remains a critical aspect of portable application designs. AUP provides the best speed-power technology of choice in the industry, with typical propagation delays of 2.0 ns at 3.3 V (3.0 ns at 1.8 V). Compromising signal integrity is not an issue with AUP as tightly-controlled output-signal edge rates yield excellent signal integrity; thus offering very low EMI (electromagnetic interference). Additionally, AUP's built-in hysteresis at the data inputs provide for enhanced noise immunity.

Pricing and Availability
TI will initially offer AUP in configurable Little Logic functions. The SN74AUP1G57, SN74AUP1G58, SN74AUP1G97, and SN74AUP1G98 are all currently available to sample along with the SN74AUP1G08. TI plans to offer AUP in all of its small scale Little Logic package offerings, including NanoFreeTM'WCSP technology. Budgetary pricing for the device is set at $0.11 in quantities of 1,000.'
