    Introduction
    Linear Technology continues to add to its portfolio of
    low noise op amps. This is not because the physics of
    noise has changed, but because low noise specifications are being combined with new features such as
    rail-to-rail operation, shutdown, low voltage and low
    power operation. Op amp noise is dependent on input
    stage operating current, device type (bipolar or FET)
    and input circuitry.This selection guide is intended to
    help you identify basic noise tradeoffs and select the
    best op amps, new or old, for your application.
    Quantifying Resistor Thermal
    Noise and Op Amp Noise
    The key to understanding noise tradeoffs is the fact that
    resistors have noise. At room temperature, a resistor
    R has an RMS voltage noise density (or “spot noise”)
    of VR = 0.13в€љR noise in nV/в€љHz. So a 10k resistor has
    13nV/в€љHz and a 1M resistor has 130nV/в€љHz. Rigorously
    speaking, the noise density is given by the equation
    VR = √4kTR, where k is Boltzman’s constant and T is

    Many applications require a frequency
    and/or amplitude-stable sine wave
    as a reference for calibration or measurement. Low harmonic distortion is
    also required for meaningful results
    in applications such as LVDT signal
    conditioning, ADC testing, and, of
    course, harmonic distortion testing.
    Many sine wave generation techniques simply cannot achieve the low
    harmonic distortion and amplitude
    stability required of a precision sine
    wave reference. The technique shown
    here generates a sine wave with less
    than 0.003% distortion and 0.1%
    amplitude stability.
    Figure 1 shows a simple oscillator
    circuit consisting of a Wien bridge
    oscillator core and an amplitude

    unprecedented low power dissipation,
    150ВµA max over temp per amplifier
    for the LTC2055 and 175ВµA max over
    temp for the LTC2054. This is five to
    seven times lower power than similar
    amplifiers, and makes these amplifiers ideally suited for battery-powered
    applications such as remote sensing.

    supply current is nearly constant
