Introduction
Have you had the exasperating experience of a laptop or
PDA deп¬Ѓantly not responding to your commands? You
frantically press key after key, but to no avail. As hope
turns to anger (but just before you throw the companyвЂ™s
laptop through the window) you slam your п¬Ѓnger against
the on/off power button. Ten seconds later, your laptop
п¬Ѓnally surrenders and the screen goes black in a high
pitched whimper. enables a DC/DC converter or turns on a power switch.
These circuits communicate with system logic to make
sure that power turns on and turns off in an orderly
manner. Additionally, failsafe features should disable
system power if there is a problem with either the input or
output power supply. The pushbutton monitor must also
be rugged: absorb high levels of electrostatic discharge,
tolerate voltage transients below ground and operate at
high voltage levels. The unresponsive pushbutton was likely the result of an
unresponsive ОјP or system logicвЂ”as evidenced by the
crash. By pressing and holding the on/off pushbutton,

Introduction
System designers often grapple with
ways to debounce and control the
on/off pushbutton of portable devices.
Traditional debounce designs use
discrete logic, flip-flops, resistors and
capacitors. Some designs require an
onboard microprocessor to monitor the
pushbutton, but this puts a burden on
the microprocessorвЂ”if it hangs up, all
device on/off control is lost. Also, in
high voltage, multicell battery applications the low voltage circuits require
an LDO power supply. In the end,
what should be a simple monitoring
circuit consumes an oversized share
of the space and complexity of the
