  Introduction
  PCI Express is the third generation of PCI (Peripheral
  Component Interconnect) technology used to connect
  I/O perhipheral devices in computer systems. It is
  intended as a general purpose I/O device interconnect
  that meets the needs of a wide variety of computing
  platforms such as desktop, mobile, server and communications. It also specifies the electrical and mechanical
  attributes of the backplane, connectors and removable
  cards in these systems. PCI Express Mini Card also provides two power sources:
  3.3V and 1.5V. The auxiliary voltage (3.3VAUX) is sourced
  over the same pins as the primary 3.3V supply and is
  available during the standby/suspend state to support
  wake-event processing on the Mini Card. Table 2 summarizes PCI Express Mini Card power specifications. Power Requirements
  Each add-in card connector requires two power rails:
  12V and 3.3V, along with a third, optional 3.3V auxiliary rail. If the designer elects to provide the auxiliary
  3.3V rail in his system or if the platform supports the
  WAKE# signal, the 3.3VAUX rail must be supplied to all

  Introduction
  A Hot Swapв„ў controller is essential to any system in
  which boards are inserted into a live backplane. The
  controller must gently ramp up the supply voltage and
  current into the card’s bypass capacitors, thus minimizing disturbances on the backplane and to other cards.
  Likewise, it must disconnect a faulty card from the
  backplane if it draws too much current. The controller
  also monitors undervoltage and overvoltage conditions
  on the backplane supply, ensuring reliable operation of
  the card’s circuitry. The LTC4215-1 takes the obvious
  next step and integrates three general purpose I/O (GPIO)
  lines and an accurate ADC into the Hot Swap controller
  to provide quantitative information on board voltage
  and current. Upgrading to the LTC4215-1 is analogous
  to replacing a car’s venerable “Check Engine” light with
  a modern dashboard information display. RS

  Introduction
  Current mode switching regulators
  and Hot Swap controllers—such as the
  LTC1622 regulator and the LTC4210
  Hot Swap controller—use a sub-50mV
  voltage across a sense resistor in a
  high-current (Amps to tens of Amps)
  path to control the current. Failure
  to properly Kelvin sense the current
  across the sense resistor is the most
  common cause of circuit malfunction
  in current mode power supplies and
  Hot Swap circuits.
  Problems usually arise when the
  layout of the circuit does not take into
  account the high currents and small
  resistances involved. For instance, a
