Introduction
AdvancedTCA В® is a modular computing architecture
developed by the PCI Industrial Computer Manufacturers
Group for use in central ofп¬Ѓce telecom environments.
PICMGВ® 3.0 deп¬Ѓnes, among other things, the electrical
and mechanical attributes of the backplane, connectors
and removable cards in these вЂ“48V systems.
Each removable card, or front board, is designed for live
insertion into a working system. A power draw of up to
200W per front board is allowed, placing the maximum
load current in the 4A to 5A range.
Card-centric inrush limiting and quantitative current
and voltage monitoring are highly desirable to sanitize
the incoming battery feeds, minimize power plane
disturbances, allow for budgeting power consumption
and permit failure prediction in an otherwise functional
system. The LTC В®4261 Hot Swapв„ў controller provides
these features. Also included is a digital interface for
controlling the functions of the LTC4261, and for reading
the current and voltage measurement registers. …

High availability вЂ“48V power systems,
such as telecom and AdvancedTCA
systems, allow for circuit board
upgrade and replacement on a live
powered backplane. The primary role
of a Hot Swap controller is to make
this possible by limiting potentially
large inrush currents, which can cause
damage to the hot swapped board or
create disturbances on the backplane.
Traditionally, вЂ“48V Hot Swap controllers operate autonomouslyвЂ”the
Hot Swap controller shuts down an
abnormally operating board before
the host processor knows why. This
simpliп¬Ѓes system design, but gives
little in the way of diagnostic support
to the host.
A far more robust system would
use the Hot Swap controller to communicate the conditions of the board
to the host processor, and let the host …
