Texas Instruments (TI) Introduces Industry's First Low-Power, 16-bit DACs with I2C Interface

Texas Instruments announced the industry's first 16-bit digital-to-analog converters (DACs) with I2CTM'interface. By combining miniature package size and low-power operation, these devices from TI's Burr-Brown product line are ideal for portable systems, including industrial process control, instrumentation, closed-loop monitoring and control, data acquisition and PC peripherals.

The DAC8571 (single channel) and DAC8574 (quad channel) utilize an I2C compatible two-wire serial interface to support high-precision, high-channel count data acquisition systems. With their broadcast feature, multiple devices can work on the same I2C bus without additional glue logic, enabling simultaneous update of up to 64 channels. The DAC8571 and DAC8574 also support the I2C high-speed mode allowing rapid 188kSPS DAC update rates at 3.4MHz clock speed.

The DAC8571 consumes only 170uA of supply current at 5V, and the DAC8574 consumes 950uA of current at 5V. A per-channel power-down mode reduces maximum supply current to 1uW. A power-on reset circuit ensures that the DACs power up at zero volts and remain there until a valid write occurs. Both converters operate on a single 2.7V to 5.5V supply.

"Integrating the I2C interface with our established precision DAC technology allows TI to offer customers a variety of cost-effective, high-performance DAC solutions for portable and high-channel count systems," said David Russell, strategic marketing engineer for TI's DAC products. "To illustrate, customers can utilize four DAC8574 devices and one DAC8571 to form the smallest footprint in the industry for a 17-channel, 16-bit DAC solution."

Both devices feature rail-to-rail outputs, 10us settling, true 16-bit monotonic performance, 94dB signal-to-noise ratio, and less than 1mV offset drift over the -40C to +105C temperature range. The DAC8571 offers less than 1mV offset error at +25C. An external reference voltage is required to set the output voltage range of both DACs.

The DAC8571 comes in an MSOP-8 package and is $2.83 in 1,000 piece quantities (suggested resale pricing). The DAC8574 comes in a TSSOP-16 package and is $9.75 in 1,000 piece quantities (suggested resale pricing). Both devices are available now from TI and its authorized distributors.
