Fairchild Semiconductor Introduces New 8 x 6 Switch Matrix for Video Applications

Fairchild FMS6502

Fairchild Semiconductor introduces the FMS6502, an 8-input, 6-output video switch matrix that offers industry-leading cost effectiveness and space savings in consumer and industrial video applications such as automotive in-cabin entertainment systems, HDTVs, flat panel displays and A/V receivers. The FMS6502 offers more functionality than comparable crosspoint video switch matrices by integrating analog switch capability, input clamps, bias circuitry and cable drivers into a single device. Consuming approximately half the board space of discrete solutions, the FMS6502 dramatically reduces part count while simplifying designs. The second-generation FMS6502 offers the same high level of integration as Fairchild’s previous-generation video switch matrix technology while providing enhanced flexibility.

Fairchild Semiconductor FMS6502

The FMS6502 accommodates standard-definition (SD), enhanced-definition (ED) and 1080i/1080p high-definition (HD) video signals –– and offers selectable 0 and 6 dB integrated cable drivers capable of driving dual video loads. The lowest power consuming device of its kind, the FMS6502 further optimizes system power by turning off unused outputs. The FMS6502’s inputs offer a sync-tip clamp or bias option that allows the device to handle video signals with or without sync. The sync-tip clamp option sets the output sync tip level to 300 mV (video with sync) and the bias option internally biases the inputs to center signals without sync (Y, Pb, Pr) to 1.25 V.

Key features and benefits of the FMS6502 include:

  • Switches eight inputs to any of six outputs for unmatched design flexibility.
  • Accommodates SD, ED, and 1080i/1080p HD video signals.
  • I2CTM compatible digital interface for ease of use.
  • Drives 75 Ohm cables directly without the need for external components.
  • Selectable 0 and 6 dB integrated cable drivers increase design flexibility.
  • Inputs with sync-tip clamp or bias option handle video signals with or with out sync.
  • Ability to disable unused outputs lowers power dissipation.
  • Integration dramatically reduces board space, lowers parts count and diminishes inventory costs, while enabling faster design time and quicker time to market.
  • Easy-to-use addressing scheme simplifies cascading of multiple FMS6502 devices to address larger switching matrices.

The FMS6502 is available in a compact TSSOP-24 lead (Pb)-free package that meets or exceeds the requirements of the joint IPC/JEDEC standard J-STD-020C and is compliant with European Union regulations now in effect
