  Active Voltage Positioning Reduces Output Capacitors

  INTRODUCTION
  Power supply performance, especially transient response,
  is key to meeting today’s demands for low voltage, high
  current microprocessor power. In an effort to minimize
  the voltage deviation during a load step, a technique that
  has recently been coined “active voltage positioning” is
  generating substantial interest and gaining popularity in
  the portable computer market. The benefits include lower
  peak-to-peak output voltage deviation for a given load
  step, without having to increase the output filter capacitance. Alternatively, the output filter capacitance can be
  reduced while maintaining the same peak-to-peak transient response.
  BASIC PRINCIPLE
  The term “active voltage positioning” (AVP) refers to
  setting the power supply output voltage at a point that is
  dependent on the load current. At minimum load, the
  output voltage is set to a slightly higher than nominal level.
  At full load, the output voltage is set to a slightly lower than
  nominal level. Effectively, the DC load regulation is

  Introduction
  Notebook computers demand more power than ever
  before, and in turn, CPU supply current requirements
  have grown significantly to the point where the latest Intel
  mobile CPUs call for up to 40A. Such high currents reveal
  many design problems that are relatively insignificant
  at lower current levels. Today’s notebook power supply designer must successfully manage the inevitable resulting power losses and thermal stresses within the already

  The increasing demand for computing power in notebook computers has
  driven up CPU clock frequency and
  supply currents significantly. Meanwhile, supply voltages have quickly
  decreased as CPUs migrated to finer
  line-width processes. As the CPU clock
  frequency exceeds 1GHz, the core
  supply current has for the first time
  surpassed 20A and the minimum
  supply voltage has dropped below 1V.
  Most of the forthcoming mobile CPUs
  call for core supply currents as high
  as 25A. In some cases, the supply
  current could exceed 30A. The Intel
  Mobile Voltage Positioning (IMVP)
  specs have been enacted to deal with
  these new mobile processor power
