    Synchronous Buck Controller U FEATURES DESCRIPTIO ■ The LTC®3730 is a PolyPhase® synchronous step-down
    switching regulator controller that drives all N-channel
    external power MOSFET stages in a phase-lockable fixed
    frequency architecture. The 3-phase controller drives its
    output stages with 120° phase separation at frequencies of
    up to 600kHz per phase to minimize the RMS losses in both
    the input and output filter capacitors. The 3-phase technique effectively triples the fundamental frequency, improving transient response while operating each controller
    at an optimal frequency for efficiency and ease of thermal
    design. Light load efficiency is optimized by using a choice
    of output Stage Shedding or Burst Mode technology.
    An internal operational amplifier provides mode selectable
    output voltage programming in conjunction with the internal VID voltage control DAC. ■

    Introduction
    CPUs used in notebook computers and other mobile
    applications now draw more than 30A of current and
    may draw as much as 65A in the near future. For
    these heavy loads, high efficiency power supplies are
    required to protect the system from excessive thermal
    stress. With this in mind, PolyPhase® switching DC/DC
    converters have become the standard for CPU power
    supplies because they are extremely efficient at these
    heavy loads. Nevertheless, for portable applications that
    spend much of the time in sleep or standby modes, light
    load efficiency has also grown in importance, where
    conserving energy for maximum battery run-time is
    also a priority. Unfortunately, traditional PolyPhase
    converters, although exceptional performers at heavy
    loads, do not yield comparable efficiencies at light load.
    Linear Technology Corporation offers a solution to this problem with a new family of PolyPhase controllers that
    allow the design of converters that are efficient over
    the entire CPU load range.

    VIN Thermal stress is a major concern for
    enterprise CPUs that frequently draw
    up to 100A of load current. PolyPhase®
    switching DC/DC converters reduce
    thermal stress by providing high efficiency at heavy loads, and thus have
    become the standard power supply
    solution for high powered CPUs.
    PolyPhase switchers are also finding
    their way into mobile applications
    where CPUs are drawing currents
    greater than 30A, and will draw 65A
    in the near future. Mobile CPUs pose
    an additional problem, though. They
    spend much of the time in sleep or
    standby modes, meaning that light
    load efficiency is important to maximize battery run-time. Traditional
    PolyPhase converters, despite their
    exceptional performance at heavy load,
