Atmel Targets High Speed Test Instrumentation with the Release of a New Dual 8-bit 1Gsps (ADC) Analog-to-Digital Converter

Atmel AT84AD001

Atmel Corporation announced the release of a new interleavable Dual 8-bit analog-to-digital (ADC) converter for high speed, low power applications such as digital sampling oscilloscopes, ATE and direct RF I/Q down-conversion. This release leverages Atmel's years of expertise in fast ADCs for instrumentation, a market that is now in need of high speed and cost-competitive solutions. The new AT84AD001 is a dual analog-to-digital converter providing 1 Gsps sampling per channel (2 Gsps sampling from one channel in interleaving mode). It integrates dual on-chip track/hold that provides excellent dynamic performance over 1.5 GHz input frequency bandwidth. SFDR (spurious free dynamic range) is typically 60dBFS at 500 MHz / 1 Gsps (Nyquist). This performance is complemented by on-chip 1:2 or 1:1 selectable data output demultiplexer and a total power consumption of 1.4 W.

Unlike conventional analog-to-digital converters which often use power hungry external control circuitry to provide interleaving and phase matching of two separate ADCs, the "smart" AT84AD001 makes use of a 3-wire (16-bit data, 3-bit address) serial interface bus, allowing on-chip functionality such as offset and gain auto calibration, and a sampling delay adjust for interleaving two analog channels.

The AT84AD001 uses an advanced high speed process and proprietary architecture that is ideally suited for undersampling applications found in satellite direct demodulation (direct interface of I/Q signals) and dual acquisition applications such as digital oscilloscopes.

The dual 8-bit 1 Gsps analog-to-digital converter is packaged in a 20 x 20 mm, 144 pin LQFP package, featuring differential (500 mVpp) inputs and LVDS (100 ohms) compliant outputs and performs over commercial and industrial temperature ranges.

The AT84AD001 is sampling now and will be in full production in March 2004 at a unit price of $155 in 1K piece quantities.
