Optical Networking Applications Benefit From Analog Devices New 40-channel and 32-channel Digital-to-Analog Converters

Analog Devices AD5380 AD5382

Ideal for optical networking systems, Analog Devices' new family of high-density digital-to-analog converters (DACs) features the industry's first 40-channel, 14-bit resolution, voltage-output DAC operating from a single 5 V power supply—the AD5380. A 32-channel version is available as well—the AD5382. The DACs' high-channel count facilitates control of large numbers of wavelengths in small spaces, which is of great benefit to optical DWDM systems.

Both devices contain an on-chip, low-drift reference, eliminating the need for an external reference IC, reducing cost and board space. The parts also include user-programmable offset and gain for digital range adjustment and system calibration. These DACs offer high accuracy and increased functionality, including a boost mode that allows the parts to achieve faster settling times and an /LDAC (load DAC) function that allows simultaneous update of all DAC outputs.

The high-performance AD5380 and AD5382 provide rail-to-rail outputs that operate up to a maximum of 5 V. They contain a parallel interface and both SPI1 and I2C serial interfaces. The devices are pin-compatible with the rest of Analog Devices' AD538x family, which includes: the AD5381 40-channel, 12-bit DAC and the AD5383, 32-channel, 12-bit DAC. Analog Devices also offers a 40-channel, 14-bit DAC, the AD5379, which is bipolar and operates from +5 V, +12 V, and -12 V supplies.

Applications

The AD5380 and AD5382 are ideal for optical networking applications, such as variable optical attenuator (VOA) control, MEMS mirror and optical switch control, and Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier (EDFA) pump laser control. They are also well suited for automatic test equipment (ATE) level-setting applications.

Pricing and Availability

The AD5380 and AD5382 are sampling now in a 100-lead LQFP package and are priced per unit at $49.50 and $42.50, respectively, in 1,000-piece quantities.
