New TI Flash-Based Digital Signal Controllers Offer Unmatched Optimized Combination of Price and Performance for Control Applications

Texas Instruments

TI's TMS320F2801, F2806 and F2808 digital signal controllers bring together the integration and performance of a digital signal processor and the ease-of-use and peripherals of a microcontroller

October 21, 2003 - Texas Instruments (TI) announced unmatched levels of control optimized performance at a competitive low price with the TMS320F2801, TMS320F2806 and TMS320F2808 digital signal controllers.' These new controllers provide a leading 100 MIPS for less than $5 in volume.' (For more information, see www.ti.com/280xpr.)'

By leveraging TI's leading digital signal processing (DSP) technology, the F2801, F2806 and F2808 controllers offer performance over 150 percent higher than other competitive flash-based control devices, which currently peak at 60 MIPS.' The F2801 controller offers a leading 20 MIPS per dollar, 50 percent more than the closest competitor at 13 MIPS per dollar.

Leading DSP Technology Enables Improved Product Features and Reduced System Costs'

By designing with TI's digital signal controllers, engineers can not only tap into a powerful, easily programmable platform, they can also develop products with increased system capability and functionality while reducing costs and time to market.' For example, motor control designs can incorporate improved torque characteristics, such as torque at zero revolutions per minute (RPM) and lower torque ripples, while lowering overall system costs through the integration of external peripherals like pulse width modulators (PMW) and analog to digital converters (ADC).' The core also integrates a number of additional peripherals, including:

  • CAN controller
  • Watchdog Timer
  • Event managers
  • Communication peripherals such as SPI, SCI, I2C

TI's high speed flash memory, which supports program execution at 85MIPS, provides designers with immediate access to large amounts of programmable data, allowing up to 64Kwords of storage with code security protection of important proprietary algorithms from theft or tampering, and 18Kwords of RAM for time-critical code or data requiring faster access.'

Cross compatibility of the C2000 platform allows designers to start developing today with hardware tools like the TMS320F2812 Development Bundle (TMDXEVP2812), which gives system designers a complete and cost effective path to take their design from concept to production.

Pricing and Availability

The F2801, 2806 and 2808 digital signal controllers extend the industry's highest control optimized TMS320C28xд platform to nine code-compatible devices. The C28x platform also includes the new ROM-based TMS320C2810, C2811 and C2812, as well as, the TMS320F2811 which each offer up to 150MIPS of performance.' Samples of the F280x digital signal controllers will be available in November 2004.
