Hungarian defense ministry selects Rohde&Schwarz to expand advanced airbase voice communications system

Rohde&Schwarz R&S VCS-4G

Rohde & Schwarz has been chosen by the Hungarian Ministry of Defense to deliver additional R&S VCS-4G voice communications system (VCS) equipment for the Papa NATO airbase in Hungary.

Rohde & Schwarz R&S VCS-4G

After successfully completing the site acceptance test for phase 1 of an airbase communications modernization project in record time, Rohde & Schwarz has been chosen to provide additional controller working positions (CWP) of its state-of-the-art, EUROCAE ED-137 VoIP-based R&S VCS-4G voice communications system in phase 2 of the project.

The VCS system is fully built on IP technology. The operational scenario at Papa includes ground-air communications using fixed and multifrequency radios, remote control of radios directly from the controller working position, ground-ground telephony using analog lines, and intercom services between operator positions. Rohde & Schwarz was selected for the Papa NATO airbase upgrade at the beginning of 2015 and was awarded the phase 2 implementation in June 2015.

To protect infrastructure investments, telephony and radio gateways from the R&S VCS-4G portfolio of interworking devices will be deployed to interconnect with government-supplied equipment such as analog PABX and radio stations with analog audio interfaces.

Thanks to its inherent all-IP system architecture, the R&S VCS-4G provides the necessary infrastructure for smooth and seamless migration to IP-based software defined radios in the future.

By selecting Rohde & Schwarz technology, the Ministry of Defense decided on a state-of-the-art, future-ready VCS solution. The fully EUROCAE ED-137 compliant R&S VCS-4G system represents the first step in migrating the customer’s communications infrastructure to next-generation communications solutions.

Voice over IP (VoIP) compliant with EUROCAE ED-137 specifications has established itself as the technology of choice for ATC, replacing the obsolete TDM-based systems. The R&S VCS-4G voice communications system complies with this standard. Its redundant design and support for numerous interfaces to external systems such as voice recording equipment and telephone lines make it the ideal choice for this project.

Due to its unique system architecture, the system is highly scalable and can be easily expanded without replacing existing equipment. The R&S VCS-4G has been designed to meet next generation ATC/AD requirements such as asset sharing, facility consolidation, geographical distribution, virtual center and remote tower, thereby providing effective support for the efficiency and safety objectives of global aviation.
