New 32-bit embedded processor families optimize industrial and network-connected control applications

May 17, 2004 - Freescale Semiconductor, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Motorola, Inc., has unveiled four new ColdFire® families- MCF547x, MCF548x, MCF523x and MCF527x- made up of more than 20 processors. These families of embedded 32-bit microprocessors are designed to offer a higher level of connectivity, control and security through some of the most flexible processors available today.

The new families are designed to reduce memory requirements, power dissipation, system board size and costs in a variety of industrial applications. With the release of these devices, Freescale is providing customers with high-performance processors that enable multiple levels of integration - all adaptable and easily integrated with memories, systems modules and peripherals.

Application examples range from large-scale factory automation to more precise healthcare related instrumentation. Whether for robotics, security, retail point-of-sale scanners and terminals or other commercial implementations, these ColdFire devices enable a consistent level of protection features, connectivity and control.

New processor families drive networked applications
Freescale's new ColdFire families contain some advanced capabilities over previous ColdFire devices, including an enhanced Time Processing Unit (eTPU).

The MCF547x and MCF548x families of microprocessors - the first to feature the V4e ColdFire core - are some of the most highly integrated ColdFire standard products to date. These devices offer a vast selection of connectivity with robust encryption options while enabling competitive system solution costs for customers.

Devices from these V4e-based families are capable of delivering up to 410 MIPS at 266 MHz. The MCF548x meets industrial temperature demands and is one of the first dual-CAN (controller area network), dual-Ethernet processors available today.
