Maxim Introduces 8-bit, 2.2 Gsps Analog-to-Digital Converter

Maxim MAX109

Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX109, the industry's highest performance, 8-bit, 2.2 Gsps analog-to-digital converter (ADC). This device offers excellent wideband dynamic performance that has been optimized for capturing input frequencies in the second Nyquist zone. Fabricated using an advanced SiGe process, the MAX109 integrates a high-performance track/hold (T/H) amplifier, a quantizer, and a 1:4 demultiplexer on a single monolithic die. At a sample rate of 2.2 Gsps and an input frequency of 300 MHz, the ADC achieves a spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) of 62 dBc and a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 45 dB. The SNR remains flat (within 1.6 dB) for input frequencies all the way up to 2 GHz. The MAX109 can also digitize/synthesize signals directly at RF, thus reducing or eliminating the need for RF downconverters. This excellent wideband dynamic performance and integrated functionality make the MAX109 ideal for applications such as broadband communication receivers, radar systems, and high-end instrumentation systems.

MAX109

The ADC supports either differential or single-ended inputs with a ±250 mV voltage range. The output data is in standard LVDS format and is demultiplexed internally by a 1:4 demultiplexer. The LVDS outputs operate from a supply-voltage range of 3.0 V to 3.6 V, which enables compatibility with single 3 V-reference systems. Control inputs allow interleaving of additional MAX109 devices to increase the effective system-sampling rate.

The MAX109 is offered in a 256-pin SBGA package and is specified over the extended (-40°C to +85°C) temperature range. Contact the factory for pricing. An evaluation kit will be available for ease of design.
