AD8312 improves performance for wireless devices in two-thirds the board space

Analog Devices is introducing a radio frequency (RF) power detector for cellular handsets that allows manufacturers to achieve greater performance while reducing system size. The low-drift AD8312 improves performance by enabling precise, temperature-stable power control with a wide dynamic range. Designed for all current and emerging cellular standards, including GSM, CDMA, W-CDMA and TD-SCDMA, the AD8312 is priced competitively and is available in a small 6-pin 1 mm x 1.5 mm package that requires two-thirds the board space of other solutions.

Accurate power control is a critical requirement for cellular handset type approval. The AD8312 measures signals at operating frequencies of less than 50MHz and up to 2.7GHz with 45dB of dynamic range and provides precise, temperature-stable performance over the full range of -40 to +85 degrees Celsius with +/-1dB of accuracy. The high sensitivity of the AD8312 allows measurement at low power levels, thus reducing the amount of power being coupled to the detector.

In addition to cellular handsets, the AD8312 is ideal for other wireless devices, such as RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator) and TSSI (Transmitted Signal Strength Indicator) wireless terminal devices, and transmitter power measurement. The AD8312 joins Analog Devices' proven family of RF/IF power detectors and controllers- which includes the AD8314, AD8315, AD8316, AD8318, AD8361 and AD8362- and works well with Analog Devices' cellular base band processors and transceivers for GSM and 3G handsets.

Availability and Pricing
The AD8312 is available in sample quantities now, with volume production in March 2005. The device is offered in a space-saving 6-pin 1mm x 1.5mm WLCSP (wafer level chip-scale package) and consumes 4.5mA from a 2.7-V to 5.5-V supply. The AD8312 is priced at $1.07 per unit in 1,000-piece quantities.
